Chef Keegan’s D Bar is D-licious!

d bar entryWalking through Hillcrest a few weeks ago I saw Keegan outside the d bar.  “I know you” I said to him… and it turned out I did!  The Host of Food Network Challenge recently opened up this hip new restaurant & dessert bar on 5th.  We finally made it back there today and I think it will not be the last time.  We really enjoyed our meal and I look forward to trying more from his whimsical menu.

$3 Brunch MimosaWe lucked out with $3 mimosas since it was sunday brunch.  We started with the “Chaparro”, a empanada style dish using masa instead of dough and filled with a homemade tomatillo chorizo.  A swipe of tomatillo- lime sauce on the plate added a nice tang.

Keegan was there today and asked how it was… “Yummy, but it could use a touch more salt” I replied.  Michael grimaced as Keegan went to check the sauce in the kitchen… “Really-you’re going to tell a Food Network chef that his food needs salt?” -Well, what else was I going to do… I figured he’d want to know!  😉  The appetizer wasn’t quite the shooting star, but the meal more than made up for it!
Kobe Sliders

I had the Kobe Sliders… oozing with drunken onions, melty white cheddar and aioli.  These were juicy, and sliders were the perfect way to go.  Instead of trying to manage to eat a big ol’ burger quickly to make sure you could eat it before the juices ran out, you could enjoy each and every bite of these babies.

Caramelized onions and a light garlic flavor didn’t overpower the burger, but were somehow the perfect match.  The parmesan fries didn’t have some old shredded cheese on top, but instead had a nice crumbling of fresh parmesan over them.

Naan-Berguesa?

My hubby went for the Naan-Berguesa? a middle eastern twist on the burger.  With naan for a bun (what else?) and a black bean hummus with chipotle mayo, he truly enjoyed it!  I had a bite and it was definitely tasty.  The cheesey chips stayed gooey to the end, making for a yummy side.

Keegan at Work

We didn’t make it to the dessert bar, but the fresh churros will definitely call me back.  They also have some fun waffle based menu items, and I’m intrigued by the fried chicken sandwich on a cheese waffle bun, so I’m going to have to give that a try.

Overall, we really enjoyed the d bar and will be back to try out happy hour sometime soon!
